The Holiday Drawings of James Ross Shipley, 1947-1988

Introduction by James Panero

Hardcover. 44 pages. $30.

It wasn’t Christmas without Grandpa’s card. Each year for over forty years, James Ross Shipley (1910–1990) created a unique drawing to celebrate the holidays. I waited at the mailbox impatiently for its arrival from Champaign, Illinois each December. The cards applied Grandpa’s fun-filled vision to family milestones and celebrated those times we came back together again for the holidays. The drawings also reveal his great talents for draftsmanship. My grandfather was a trained artist who worked for General Motors before becoming a professor of art and design at the University of Illinois—where he was known by a generation of students as “Coach.”

The Holiday Drawings of James Ross Shipley, 1947-1988 now brings together these original ink works into a 44-page hardcover book. Available here.
